It’s always the humble foods that worm their way into our hearts. Displaced Malaysians don’t miss fine dining—they miss their neighborhood nasi lemak place. Travelling Italians yearn for pizza or a simple plate of pasta, wonderlust Californians long for proper tacos, and all this time, the globe-trotting German probably dreams of bratwurst.

In the main drinking and eating space at Pavilion, Weissbrau has created a tiny, bare-bones but jolly pub.. brick walls, fresh german beer on tap, the works. What people do not know too well however, is that the German food here is as good as the beer they serve. You order your beer, where four brews are on tap, and then plunk down at one of the haphazard communal tables or on a bar stool and place your order for food. This restaurant is seriously dedicated to high-quality German beer, as well as good old fashioned German/European dishes, and you won’t find a token vegetarian option unless you count sauerkraut, spätzle, or potato salad as vegetarian:P

On a Thursday night, the place was full and rowdy, with people sitting at the bar, standing, and sharing tables cluttered with tall, teetering glasses of German beers and plates of french fries and finger food. But on a Monday night, it is sometimes much quieter, with mainly a drinking crowd. The Weiss beers are a heaven sent. A puckeringly zesty beer with a nice fruity after taste. This beer was only too easy to drink.

The Erdinger Weissbier (blonde) n Erdinger Dunkel (dark) RM28.00

The Erdinger Weissbier is a Bavarian style brewed beer with an outstanding and unforgettable wheat beer flavor. This is my absolute favourite beer. The Erdinger Weissbier ‘dark’ is a rich and smooth wheat beer and owes its full-bodied flavor to the fine hops and dark malt used in its production. Cumi likes them dark. I usually prefer to go blonde.

Weissbrau Rösti – RM28.00

This is a traditional swiss potato dish with pan fried with butter, onion, cheese and topped fried egg. Rösti is a Swiss dish consisting mainly of potatoes. It was originally a common breakfast eaten by Swiss farmers and many Swiss people consider rösti a national dish. Today, rather than considering it a complete breakfast, it is more commonly served to accompany other dishes such as Cervelas or Fleischkäse.

The Rösti served at Weissbrau is fantastic as it has bits of ham in it. Just look at the runny egg yolk. Eating carbs is just away too much fun. I am finding it hard to resist I tell you.

Bavarian Bacon and Cheese – RM28.00

A handsome, hearty burger with a huge-ass juicy pork meat patty! The crispy onions, fatty bacon and melting cheese will have you quaking at the knees. An awesome tasting burger. Highly recommended.

Flam quatro – RM36.00 consists of parma ham, smoked salmon, prosciutto and mixed seafood

A nice and light option if you don’t feel like the heavier pizza. The flam served at Weissbrau is nicely charred on the edges with a succulent center. The ingredients are superbly fresh.

Pork knuckle served with sides of Spätzle and sauerkraut – RM48.00

Whilst the knuckle itself was slightly overcooked and hard on the outside, the Spätzle was fabulous. Spätzle literally translated from German as “little sparrow,” and is a dish of tiny noodles or dumplings made with flour, eggs, water or milk, and salt. In Germany, Spätzle is served as a side dish much like potatoes or rice, and is often accompanied by a sauce or gravy. All I can say is, more carbo loading.

Homemade Gourmet sausages – the RM38.00

Most everybody loves a good Bratwurst. The name is derived from Old High German brätwurst – brät, which is finely chopped meat and -wurst, or sausage. Oh yeah, I know a good Bratwurst when I see one. Perhaps the most popular sausage in Germany is a small, thin bratwurst from Franconia’s largest city, Nuremberg. It is surprisingly small being only 7 to 9cm in length (only) and weighing between 20 and 25g. Presenting the Nürnberger bratwurst.

The ones served at Weissbrau are delicious, pork-based, typically seasoned with fresh marjoram which gives them their distinctive flavour, and barbecued over a fire. Served with either sauerkraut or potato salad, and accompanied by a dollop of horseradish or mustard, this dish goes perfect with beer.

Chocolate mousse dessert- not my favourite as it was super sweet, but smooth enough I suppose. The pear’s were rather tasteless. We could have skipped dessert as the other dishes were hearty and delicious and we will definitely be back for more!

We were recently invited to Weissbrau, that German restaurant in Pavilion KL, under the same management of Spasso Milano, one of our favourite Italian restaurants in town. They serve authentic-styled cuisine from Germany and the surrounding region, such as spatzli, rosti, pork knuckle, along with other good old favourites such as Hungarian Beef Goulash, Flammkuchen, and a selection of fine sausages including nurnberger, bayerische pepper, emmentaler, and schublig, just to name a few.

Anyway, the kind people of Weissbrau wanted us to try their new menu, courtesy of Executive Chef Pascal Schnyder and what can I say.. it was good! Along with bloggers KYSpeaks, Kimberlycun, Shoalin Tiger and Bangsarbabe, we pigged out on German food, served buffet style. The spread was generous and the intoxicating aroma of pork knuckle was in the air. In addition to that of course, was the free flow of fine German beer .. drunk to a live performance by Malaysian band Mad Sally. Oh, twas an extremely entertaining evening indeed!

This little piggy went to market, this little piggy stayed at home, this little piggy had roast beef,
and
this little piggy.. became my LUNCH.

Eurodeli for that piggy fix and supposedly authentic European food. What you see in Cumi’s background are the famous Swiss-German specialities consisting of over 100 varieties of sausages and ham that are available for you to buy and cook up at home at a later stage. They are also available on the menu.

We paid the Eurodeli in Damansara Kim a visit and found that the outlet that opened in 1997, has recently refurbished. The entrance was full of congratulatory flowers.

For us, the food here was only just so-so. The Bratwurst was too salty and something as simple as the easy-to-whip-up mash potato lacked the potatoey, buttery creamy finish that I like. The sauerkraut was flat and lacked that fermented, vinegarish, cabbagey kick that is essential in a good sauerkraut.

Another point not in their favour was that the restaurant was so understaffed, 3 separate families came up to the bar counter to complain that they were not being served. Eek! Not good.

Taking the set, my lunch came with coffee (strong and good – needed this after the marathon) and a dessert (lame mousse thingy), all for only RM25.00

Man, nothing like the first ice cold beer for the day, especially after completing 21K! We deserve it eh? The only thing I can say about the draft beer at Eurodeli is that it is bitingly, stingingly good! Fresh is not the word.

There u have it folks! The KL Marathon.. what a rush. We will definitely do it again!

At STADT German Cuisine and Bistro we found the perfect place to satisfy all my favourite activities

Seafood Soup – RM7.90
The soup was excellent. A thick, robust savoury tomato base made fresh and infused with all the flavours of the ocean made a great appetite teaser. We were prepped for our mains.

The Pork Knuckle – RM38.90
Given the choice of Original vs. Honey glazed ,we went with the glaze version but were surprised to find the crust rather unsweetened. When asked, the waitress replied that the coating of sugar is added right at the end. Hmmmm.. we think someone might have forgotten the Honey (?)

First the skin. This was not bad at all. The skin had enough snap, crackle and pop, if you like, but the flavour could have been better.

Delving in, we found the flesh tough, dry and rather tasteless.

If not for the extra(and boy did we need plenty) brown sauce and honey sauce we ordered, the pork knuckle would have been too dry to swallow.

Having said that, the menu here at STADT is massive, and we only shared one Pork Knuckle because it was the Hefe and Dunkel that we came for really We will definitely be back to try the other items.
