Hello and Welcome to our monkey den!

Yes! This is yet another food, travel, lifestyle and adventure blog that is written in 99% English – a mix of US English and British English. Why? We blame it on the idiot box and both our mixed formal education! The remainder 1% has names of dishes and places in its original form or in its common usage.

Ciki – born in Malaysia, studied and worked in the U.K.

Cumi – born in Malaysia, studied and worked in Australia and the great U.S. of A.

For the convenience of our international readers, we’ve made it possible for you to read in several popular world languages. Hopefully, it translates well! You can find the languages represented by the country flag buttons on the top right hand corner of the page.

    More about us…songkhla2

This blog started out a couple of years back as a means to journal our travels and related photos. However, because we enjoy eating so much (as do other Malaysians) this blog soon took on the form of a food blog…

There is Cumi-Ciki but who is ‘Dan’? For non-Malaysian or Indonesian readers (our languages are similar but have vast differences too), ‘Dan’ is not an imaginary person but the English word ‘And’. It’s not spelt backwards but that’s how it translated in Malay language. Since we used it in our original Blogger site, we kept it the same here.

Cumi & Ciki is a Malaysian food and travel blog, which also tells of our worldly adventures! The name is derived from a popular educational television puppet show for Malaysian children in the 70s and 80s. This is the tale of the two traveling, eating, thrill-seeking monkeys from Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Peninsular Malaysia. Food and culture go hand in hand.

We feel that in life, we need to enjoy what we do, have passion, cultivate a sense of curiosity about the world

    Our Motto:
    1. Be curious. The only way to know if you like worms is to try/eat worms. Don’t try, don’t know. The only way to know if one curry is better than another is to try BOTH.
    2. Experiment. Once in a while, make it a point to eat at some place you would not normally go.
    3. Know your likes and dislikes – Don’t be wishy-washy.
    4.  Support local produce. This is after all our country and we are Malaysian.
    5. Give praise to those who can cook and cook well – it takes talent and a lot of effort .. I thank God for my close baker friends and chefs (e.g. Fatboybakes, Just Heavenly Pleasures and Su of Delectable. Also, I feel totally blessed when Cumi cooks for me in the kitchen;))
    6. Treat yourself whenever you can – life is too short. Take time out from your hectic schedule to enjoy that nasi lemak, that pavlova or that Beef steak!

The food culture we currently have in Malaysia has still room to grow, although people are becoming increasingly curious about food, and more willing to experiment, then say, 5 years ago. Come with us on our journey of Gastronomy and Travel. We hope you will be entertained!

    Happy Reading!

    xoxo,
    Ciki
