When Cumi & Ciki first read the email we were wondering what on earth is a Hot-can. Apparently this Can of drink heats up all on its own before you drink it. A heating mechanism that is self-contained in such an itsy- bitsy, teeny-weeny aluminum can, how hot could it possibly get?
Hot-can is the brain-child of Dato’ Kenneth Warren Kolb, CEO of Hot-can Sdn. Bhd. By the age of 22 Dato Kenneth had already designed, developed and patented 25 over products and holds more than 27 patents worldwide. His background training is in Biological Science.
Watching the video and listening to Dato Kenneth’s short presentation, we were still not convinced. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, so we proceeded to try it out for ourselves.
Step 1 – turn the can over and read the instructions.
Step 2 – Peel off the anti-tamper label
Step 3 – Press the activation button
Step 4 – Shake can until steaming stops (green button lights up)
Step 5 – Turn can upright and enjoy your steaming hot drink!
Wow, unbelievable. The drink wasn’t just warm.. it was HOT! be careful not to scald your tongue.
We told Dato Kenneth to please, please consider Hot-can of soups, as this would be ideal for those of us who love tracking/camping in colder climates. Imagine how easy it would be to take this up to Mt Kinabalu without having to worry about heating utensils! A fantastic creation. We were really impressed. Anyway, below is a bit about the technical aspects of the Hot-can for those who are interested in what makes the can HOT.
What makes it heat up?
A special double chambered aluminum can holds the beverage in the outer chamber and the calcium oxide (quick lime) in the inner chamber. When the button at the bottom of the can is pressed water is released into the quicklime, starting a reaction that heats the contents of the can by 50-55°C in less than 3 minutes.
Is the reaction safe?
Yes, it is non-toxic and the resulting by-products are chalk & water. The reaction is exothermic (giving off heat) and is essentially Carbon Dioxide (CO2) released when producing the Calcium Oxide (quicklime, CIO) by heating Calcium Carbonate (Limestone, Ca CO3).
How can I be assured that the Hot-Can is safe to use?
Hot can is FDA approved. The reaction is 100% natural, non-toxic and nonflammable. The heat is generated in a separate chamber called the heat engine, which does not allow the beverage to ever come into contact with the minerals used in the heat engine.
Why use aluminum to make Hot-Cans?
Because of its low carbon footprint! Aluminum, unlike plastic can be recycled again and again. It does not lose any of its strength or quality in the recycling process. It can be a never-ending process that continues to save energy and resources. That is why recycling aluminum makes sense. It saves a lot of energy. Today, aluminum can recycling saves about 11.5 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh)—enough electricity to light a city the size of Pittsburgh for six years.
